While visiting the Flanders Field Museum located in the Cloth Hall in Ypres (Ieper) Belgium, we were told about the WWI Sanctuary Wood Trenches and Hill 62 about a 30 minute drive from the city. There we found an incredible museum full of WWI artifacts and miles of trenches from WWI that have been excavated by the owner of the property.

Sanctuary Wood Museum (Hill 62) After the First World War a farmer returned to reclaim his land in and around what was left of the wood he had left in 1914. A section of the original wood and the trenches in it were cleared of debris and casualties but generally the farmer left a section of a British trench system as he found it.

A commemoraiton site since more than a century showing the relics of original Canadian support and communication trenches in the rearguard of the Hill 62 higher ground. The bottom, lining and tunnels are original. It is obvious that through the decades the sides of the trenches had to be reinforced.

But the exact area where this museum is, Hill 62, the battle of Mount Sorrel, in defence of Ieper, is an important part of the struggle AND SHOULD NEVER BE FORGOTTEN no matter how one sees the place, one should RESPECT what it stands for and APPRECIATE what they have, that they can visit a place such as this and marvel at its beauty now.
